School Program

School Start Up

The Vermont Futures School Program engages 10th grade high school students in a work-based learning experience that inspires them to take personal responsibility for their own education.

Crews

Students in the VYCC's School Program work in small crews led by professional-level School Instructors. Together, they complete a variety of conservation-based projects rooted in the landscape and traditions of Vermont, while being simultaneously immersed in a dynamic educational curriculum.

Students typically take one or two classes at their sending school and spend the remainder of the day on the VYCC crew. The program lasts for one semester, often with the option to reenroll for a second semester or the full school year.

Academic Credit

Students earn three to five academic credits for the full school year. Credits may be awarded in the areas of English, Physical Education, Math, Science, Social Studies, Humanities/Civics, Service Learning, Unified Arts, or as an Elective. Credits awarded depend on the individual school partnership.

Partnerships with nine Vermont high schools and support from the legislature and private foundations provide this opportunity to 102 Vermont students.

Application Process

Candidates for VYCC School crews are selected through the guidance offices of each participating high school. Once selected, the application process is then administered through the VYCC office.
